Conversation about Life and Death

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

— Maya Angelou

We were sitting quietly in a small circle waiting for someone to start the conversation.  Seven people gathered to talk about death, about the fear and pain for loss, and about the possibilities to reconnect to themselves and the world.

“I have a question...”  The conversation started.  We have unique personal experiences of love and loss, but I sensed the air of compassion and empathy surrounding each story.  We shared our feelings about the importance of human connections and the desire to protect those close to us.  We talked about people who are lonely when they die and about the significance of human presence.

I could see how people needed to break their silent inner dialogue and bring out their self-story.  I witnessed the process of self-acceptance and gaining strength.  It was fascinating to watch how we recognize ourselves in other’s stories...  It brought me a sense of connection; I was not alone.  The elephant in the room, “Death and I”, was not ignored, but rather invited into our group conversation.  It was an air of curiosity, recognition and giving...

I was driving home, and I was more alive than ever!  Thank you!

There is something magical and paradoxical about fire.  It draws you in, and we sense the wisdom of nature and the place of fire in the circle of life.  It pushes us away when we face its power of destruction.  The red/orange tongues of the flame are beautiful and dangerous in the dark night.  They evoke the memory of human history, our personal past, our love and losses.  We are mesmerized by the constant change of colors, shapes and sound.  We hope to get a glimpse of our future...

Gathering around the fire and stretching hands to connect, we feel safe and together.  We sing songs and share stories...

As time goes by, the darkness fades away giving room to the blue sky.  We touch cool green grass and welcome the first gold arrows of sun. We feel the importance of bringing more people into this exceptionally wise and rich conversation.

I was thinking to ask or for someone to ask: “What does connection mean, what does it bring in?”

The Path

I have written this poem before but always through a window, never through an open door.
— Andrea Gibson

I love Andrea Gibson’s poems.  They fill me in with her courage to understand herself and others, with her ability to embrace pain and joy of life, and with her love, love that penetrates each of her thoughts...  Such a gift for humanity!

Andrea’s quote resonates with me.  I am drawn to witness a rebirth of a person.  It is a gift of seeing new stories and a new path in a landscape that was so old and familiar until the new door opened.  I also can imagine the pain and joy of that rebirth process.

I am using a small pattern of polymer clay, orange and green colors. I like these combinations, the strong, forward energy of orange color and the softness and calmness of green color.  The yellow translucent center is not aiming at any direction; it is free of thoughts or expectations.  It is just an open yellow window...

As I travel with my clay, turning pattern in different directions, I find myself on different paths. I am curious about new findings of feelings and thoughts.  Here, on my right I see dense green growth.  It feels as I am slowly and carefully moving the branches and stepping into a vulnerable unknown... My head is spinning from thoughts and questions” “What?  Who?  Why?  How?”  On a left and ahead I see a hot orange opening, vibrant and textured.  I feel I want to plunge in; my feelings of thirst for pure excitement replace careful thoughts and questions!

Usually, comfortable with clarity and certainty, I am surprised how I embrace this process of discovery and unknown.  I am in awe of how each turn of the pattern opens the door to experiencing the new landscape!

When I look back to my Yellow Center, I feel gratitude for the courage, curiosity and creativity of my journey.

Ohh, my dear Path...  I am standing back from my common expectation of myself: straight line to the best outlined outcome...  My friend just reminded me about Galina’s tendency to achieve, to be perfect.  It helped me to relax and enjoy the process of following my curiosity.  Thank you!

The Gift

I witnessed a very humble, emotional, and generous moment at Nashua Community Music School when Genesis Inspiration Foundation donated $50,000 check to support youth music programs.  It was incredible to watch the expression of awe and gratitude of the  music teachers, young musicians barely carrying instruments, and their parents...  It was unexpected, and it was a testimony to Nashua Community Music School’s mission to offer music education opportunities for all ages.  I was thinking about the importance of social responsibility, actions and lasting impact.  Just think about how this gift will give youth an opportunity to learn music.  I can envision how it will change many children and their families emotionally, cognitively and physically.  These children will grow inspired, shape new views of self, their community, and the world.  They will carry connections to music in their hearts!
